The Untold Side Companion App

A free companion app designed to make recording seizures and recovery easier — especially when remembering everything afterwards is difficult.

A seizure can be recorded with one tap. You do not need to fill everything in at the time. Save the seizure first, then return later to add what happened before, during and after it, how recovery progressed, what a witness saw and anything else you want to remember.

The app also includes seizure history, recovery updates, witness accounts, medication records, notes, a Medical Card, statistics based on your own records, doctor summaries, printable information and backup/export tools.

Important — your information

Your saved Companion App records are stored on the device and browser you are using unless you export them.

Make regular backups.

Go to Backup & export → Export JSON backup. A backup file will be downloaded to your device.

The filename will normally begin seizure-companion-backup and end in .json.

Keep this file somewhere safe. Creating a backup is particularly important before clearing browser or website data, removing or reinstalling the app, resetting your browser or device, or changing phones, tablets or computers.

If locally stored app data is cleared and you do not have a backup, your saved records may not be recoverable.

Restoring a backup

Go to Backup & export → Restore a JSON backup.

Your device’s file picker will open. The app does not automatically find the backup for you.

Open Files, Downloads or wherever you saved the backup. If you cannot see it, use the search box in your Files app and search for seizure-companion-backup.

Select the .json backup file you want to restore. The app will then give you the available restore options, such as merging the backup with records already on the device or replacing the existing data.

Read the option carefully before choosing Replace, because replacing existing data may remove information currently stored in the app.

Printing and appointments

The Companion can organise information from your saved records into summaries that can be viewed or printed.

These can be useful when preparing for an epilepsy, neurology or other healthcare appointment. They are based only on the information entered into the app and should not be treated as a medical interpretation of your seizures.

What this app is for

The Companion App is designed to help people record and organise information about their seizures, recovery and epilepsy.

It does not diagnose epilepsy, decide whether an event was definitely a seizure, predict seizures, replace medical advice, or replace an individual seizure or rescue-medication plan.

Information recorded in the app can be shown to healthcare professionals, but clinical decisions should be made with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Emergency situations

The Companion App is not an emergency service.

If someone needs urgent medical assistance, contact the emergency services for the country you are in and follow their individual emergency or rescue-medication plan where one exists.

A useful first step

  1. Complete your Medical Card.
  2. Add your usual seizure information and medications.
  3. Create a JSON backup once you have entered your information.
  4. Keep that backup somewhere safe.
  5. Create a new backup occasionally as your records grow.
