Myths & Claims
Claim: “Stress causes epilepsy.”
Verdict: false as a general statement. Stress can be a seizure trigger for some people who already have epilepsy, but that is not the same as saying stress itself is the cause of epilepsy.
Cause and trigger are not the same thing
The cause of epilepsy may be genetic, structural, infectious, metabolic, immune or unknown. A trigger is something that can make a seizure more likely in a person who is already susceptible.
Why stress can matter
Stress may affect sleep, medication routines, alcohol use, hormones and autonomic arousal. Any of those can alter seizure threshold. Some people also report stress as a consistent personal trigger, while others do not.
Epilepsy Action lists stress among commonly reported triggers, while making clear that triggers are individual and do not explain why a person developed epilepsy in the first place.
Why wording matters
Telling someone “your epilepsy is caused by stress” can wrongly imply that the condition is psychological or that better coping would remove it. A more accurate statement is that stress may influence seizure likelihood in some people.
