Sources & Editorial Policy
How health information is researched
The Untold Side prioritises authoritative clinical guidance, professional classification documents and peer-reviewed research. UK clinical material may draw on NICE and NHS sources; international classification and terminology may draw on the International League Against Epilepsy. The source appropriate to a particular claim is identified with the content.
Original wording
Research is used to establish facts, not to copy another organisation’s writing. Explanations are written in original language. Direct quotations are used sparingly, clearly marked and attributed where appropriate.
Lived experience
Personal accounts are identified as lived experience and are not presented as proof that the same symptom, cause or treatment applies to somebody else. Community material is only republished with permission.
Updates and corrections
Medical terminology, classifications and guidance change. Material may be reviewed and updated when important evidence or guidance changes. Substantive factual corrections should be made transparently rather than quietly preserving an error.
Source hierarchy
Broad clinical claims are checked first against current guidelines, classification documents, systematic reviews or major consensus statements where available. Individual studies are used for narrower questions, emerging evidence or subjects not yet covered well by guidance. Historical claims are checked against primary records or specialist historical scholarship rather than modern retellings alone.
Review and update process
Pages are reviewed when major guidance, classifications or safety information changes, and when a reader or contributor identifies something that may need checking. A page can also be revised when stronger evidence becomes available or when wording could give the wrong impression even if the underlying fact is correct.
Corrections
Factual corrections are made when an error is identified. Material differences in interpretation or uncertainty are not hidden by presenting one view as settled fact. If a subject remains debated, the uncertainty should be visible in the article.
Independence
The Untold Side is an independent project. External organisations may be linked because they are useful sources or support services; a link does not mean that organisation has reviewed, endorsed or sponsored this website unless explicitly stated.
